Synergy: Inter-platform Keyboard and Mouse Sharing

For more than a year now, I've been sharing a Flat Panel LCD Monitor between a PowerMac G5 and a Dell PC running Windows XP. The monitor has both a VGA and a DVI input which allows me to switch between the two computers with the push of a button on the front of the monitor. I love it. The issue I've been dealing with, however, is that I use a separate keyboard and mouse for each computer. It's become all too common for me to type a sentence or two before realizing I'm on the wrong keyboard. I'm pleased to report that this problem is now solved!

Evaluating NX

What is NX? Well, it's software that enables you to securely (via SSH) access and efficiently use your computers and applications remotely. Other open source and commercial products exist that enable similar capabilities, such as VNC, Windows Terminal Services and Citrix. But NX claims better efficiency through the use of an optimized X protocol implementation, and it can serve up X applications as well as VNC and Citrix and Terminal Services (RDP) served applications. Thus we can access Windows, X, and Mac OS X applications remotely using any available Internet connection. Read more about NX at the NoMachine web site (http://www.nomachine.com/).

New Options for Technical Books

I own hundreds of technical books. Well, not actually hundreds. Over one hundred for sure. Dozens let's say. I own several dozen technical books. Name a topic in computer science or software development and I probably own a title about or related to that topic. Some of these books are timeless classics. I put any book by Gerald Weinberg in this category. His The Secrets of Consulting, for example, is full of wisdom for all times such as

Using cron with Drupal

Several of Drupal's modules, such as Search and Aggregator, require intervention in order to be kept up-to-date. This intervention can be automated by using some sort of scheduler. On Linux systems the cron utility can be used for this purpose.

Learning the Drupal CMS

This site is built using Drupal, an open source Content Management System (CMS) written with the popular PHP web scripting language. There are lots of open source PHP-based CMS's from which to choose, as evidenced by the long list of such systems on opensourcecms.com. Most of these systems aim to provide a means to manage a community-oriented site. Threaded comments, blogging and syndication are standard fare. Drupal is no exception. Even though the Evenhouse Consulting site is not by most standards a "community" site, we have chosen to use Drupal because it appears that it will enable us to keep the site content up-to-date easily, it seems to be one of the most mature and popular of these systems, and, frankly, I liked the design of their web site. I expect to post more about learning and implementing Drupal as we build out the site.
